Batch barcode generator and label sheets

Paste a list or open a CSV, pick the format and get every barcode at once: as a ZIP of files, or as a PDF of label sheets ready for your printer. Nothing is uploaded.

Any text per line: SKUs, asset tags, serial numbers. Pasting two or three columns from a spreadsheet adds a caption and a number of copies.

On label sheets a barcode larger than its label is shrunk to fit, and you are told when that happens.

Type the code to pick the layout, or choose from the list. Codes that share a label size and count (5160, 5260, 8160, 18160; L7160, J8160) give the same layout.

How a batch works

  1. Step 1

    Bring your list

Paste a column from a spreadsheet, open a CSV or generate a number sequence. A second column becomes the caption and a third the number of copies.

  2. Step 2

    Check the rows

Every row is checked for the format you chose, as you type. Rows that cannot be drawn are listed with their line number and the reason.

  3. Step 3

    Download

Get a PDF of label sheets with the barcodes as vectors, or a ZIP with one SVG or PNG file per row, named after its value.

Label sheet layouts

Type the code printed on your box (5160, 8160, L7160, J8160…) in the sheet box above and the layout is picked for you. The layouts match the label size and count of common Avery sheets, centred on the page; codes on the same row share one layout. Sheets from other makers with the same size usually fit too. For anything else, choose “Custom grid” and type the measurements printed on the box or the maker’s template.

Switch the preview to “Actual size (1:1)”, hold a bank card to the screen and match the box to it: the page is then drawn as big as the paper, with every barcode placed as in the PDF. You see which barcodes are shrunk to fit before you print anything.

Avery is a trademark of its owner; these layouts are not made or endorsed by Avery. Only the sheets marked “Yes” were checked against the Avery template pages below. The others use the commonly listed label size and count but were not checked one by one, so measure your sheet against the layout, and remember that printers shift paper slightly: print a test page with outlines on plain paper first. A wrong size shows up in the 1:1 preview and on that test page.

Getting the size right

Barcodes on the sheet keep the module width and bar height you set. If one is bigger than its label, it is shrunk to fit and you are told by how much: a shrunk barcode has thinner bars, so test-scan it. Set a smaller module width or less data to avoid shrinking.

In the PDF the barcodes are vectors, so they print sharp at any printer resolution. PNG files in the ZIP store their dpi, so layout and label programs place them at the right size. For a single barcode with every option, use the generator.

Numbered runs: asset tags and SSCC

For asset tags, serials and inventory numbers, the number sequence takes a prefix, a first number, a step, a width and a suffix, and shows the last value and where the next run can start. Nothing is stored: write the next start down, or come back and type it, to keep two print runs from overlapping.

For pallets and cartons, choose “SSCC for pallets and cartons”. You give the extension digit, your GS1 company prefix and the first serial reference. Each label gets its serial padded to the width that is left in 17 digits, then the check digit from the GS1 mod 10 method, and is drawn as a GS1-128 barcode with the (00) identifier. If the serial no longer fits, the page says where the run would end instead of making wrong labels. You can compare a result with the check digit calculator.

Questions about batches and labels

How should I lay out my CSV?

Put the barcode data in the first column. A second column, if present, is printed as a caption under each barcode, and a third column sets how many copies of that label to print (1 to 100). A header row is detected, and you can switch it on or off.

How many barcodes can I make at once?

Up to 1,000 rows and 3,000 labels per batch. For more, split the list and run it again; nothing is stored between runs.

My labels do not line up with the sheet. What can I do?

Print at 100% (“Actual size”), not “Fit to page”. Then print one page on plain paper with outlines on, hold it against a label sheet in front of a light, and adjust the margins of a custom sheet if your printer shifts the paper.

How do I find the layout for my label sheet?

Type the code on the box (for example 5160, 8160, L7160 or J8160) in “Sheet code on the box”. Codes that share a label size and count give the same layout, so 5160, 5260 and 8160 pick one sheet. If your code is not listed, choose a sheet with the same label size or use “Custom grid” with the measurements on the box.

What does the actual-size preview show?

Page 1 drawn at the size of the paper. Browsers cannot know how big a screen really is, so you hold a bank card to the screen and drag the scale until the box matches it. The barcodes are placed exactly as in the PDF, and the page tells you how many are shrunk to fit their label.

What happens to rows that are not valid?

They are listed with the line number and the reason, and left out of the files. Fix them in the list and run the batch again.

How do I print a run of SSCC pallet labels?

Open “Number sequence” and choose “SSCC for pallets and cartons”. Enter the extension digit, your GS1 company prefix, the first serial and how many. Each label gets its serial reference, zero-padded, and its GS1 check digit, written as a GS1-128 (00) barcode. The page shows the last SSCC and the serial where your next run can start.

Can I continue on a sheet I already used?

Yes. Set “Skip labels” to the number of labels already used and printing starts on the next free one.
