Barcode scanner

Point your camera at a barcode or open a picture of one. It is read in your browser: the picture is not uploaded or recorded.

Start the camera, or open, drop or paste a picture of a barcode.

Pictures and camera frames are read on this device and not sent anywhere.

Results

Nothing scanned yet. Reads EAN, UPC, Code 128, GS1-128, Code 39, Code 93, ITF, Codabar, QR Code, Data Matrix, Aztec and PDF417.

How to get a good scan

  • Hold the barcode flat, fill most of the frame and wait a moment for the camera to focus.
  • Avoid glare: tilt glossy labels and screens slightly.
  • For a linear barcode, keep the bars across the red line.
  • Pictures work best when cropped close to the barcode and in focus.

The scanner shows the format and the data of every barcode it reads. For EAN, UPC and ITF-14 it also checks the check digit; for GS1 data in Code 128, Data Matrix or QR Code it lists each Application Identifier and its value. Use the check digit calculator to see the calculation step by step.

Made a barcode here and want to be sure it reads? Download it, open the file in the scanner, and compare the result with what you typed. For the final check, scan a printed sample with the scanner that will read it in use.

Questions about the scanner

Why does it ask for the camera?

The browser asks before any site can use the camera. The camera starts only when you press “Start camera”, and the picture is read frame by frame on your device. Press Stop or leave the page to turn it off.

It does not find the barcode. What can I try?

Fill most of the frame with the barcode, keep it flat and in focus, and avoid glare. For a picture, crop it close to the barcode. Very small or damaged codes may need a sharper photo.

Which formats can it read?

EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, Code 128 and GS1-128, Code 39, Code 93, ITF and ITF-14, Codabar, QR Code, Data Matrix, Aztec and PDF417.

Does it check the barcode?

For EAN, UPC and ITF-14 it shows whether the check digit is right, and for GS1 data it lists each Application Identifier with its value.
