What is an ITF-14 barcode?
ITF-14 is the barcode printed on outer cartons and cases. It carries a 14-digit GTIN-14 that identifies the case rather than the single item inside it, drawn in Interleaved 2 of 5, a digits-only barcode that prints well on corrugated board.
The thick frame around the bars, the bearer bar, evens out the pressure of printing plates and helps stop a scanner from reading only part of the code. The last digit is a GS1 mod 10 check digit.

Printing ITF-14 barcodes
- ITF-14 is meant for cases, not for items scanned at a checkout.
- Corrugated board spreads ink: print a test on the real board and scan it.
- Change the size with the module width, not by stretching the image.
- Print one sample on the printer and label stock you will use, and scan it with the scanners that have to read it, before a full run.
Need a sheet of them? The batch generator makes up to 1,000 ITF-14 barcodes at once and lays them out on Letter or A4 label sheets.
Where the numbers come from
A ITF-14 barcode is only as good as the number in it. For products sold through retailers, the number is a GTIN built from a GS1 Company Prefix that the brand owner licenses from its local GS1 office, and retailers check numbers against GS1 records. The guide from GS1 New Zealand linked below walks through that process as one example.
This site draws barcodes for numbers you already have. It does not issue, sell or register GS1 numbers, and a correct check digit does not mean a number is registered.
Questions about ITF-14
How do I get a GTIN-14 for my carton?
A GTIN-14 is built from your GS1 Company Prefix, following your GS1 office’s rules for packaging levels. This site draws the barcode for a number you already have; it does not assign numbers.
Can I remove the frame?
The frame is part of how ITF-14 is normally printed, so this generator keeps it. If your customer asks for a version without it, check their label specification first.
Is ITF-14 the same as Interleaved 2 of 5?
ITF-14 is Interleaved 2 of 5 used with exactly 14 digits, a GS1 check digit and the bearer frame.
